The War with the Oobleckans

I sat trying to relax in the easy chair while watching TV over the yells in the cockpit. I decided to check it out.

"Fuel! Fuel!" irritated and angry Andrew exclaimed, the pilot and the commander of the spaceship, "Doesn't everybody know they should bring extra 'fuel' on a trip?! Common sense, Jennifer."

"I thought we wouldn't need extra fuel if we are only going to Mars," said Jennifer.

"We always need extra fuel! Expect the unexpected," he said as his face turned less red. "Now we have to stop somewhere and use resources from there."

My heart stopped pounding hard and fast as Andrew got less angry. I couldn't stand it when elegant Jennifer got yelled at. Who would yell someone as beautiful and peaceful as her?

I went back to the entertainment room and looked out the window at the different colored stars we passed by. In about an hour I felt our spaceship land.

I looked outside once more and saw a greenish-yellowish-orange sky. I tried to see what the ground was like but all I saw was light green.

I left the room and went back to the cockpit. Andrew had his feet up by the wheel with his arms folded and he seemed to be trying to sleep.

"Andrew," I said softly. "Andrew," I said again. "Andrew!" I had grown impatient.

"Whoa. What? Okay, whatever," he said then immediately went back to sleep.

Since I was his brother I had a right to do this. I smacked him in the face and shook him. He punched me back in the stomach as a reflex. I wish he didn't work out so much.

Finally, he woke up.

"What, Thomas?" he asked angrily for he lost his temper easily.

"Where are we?" I asked him.

"I don't know but it looks safe, now leave me alone."

I left him alone and decided to hover down to the land and examine it. As soon as I got out of the ship I felt a chill down my back. It told me it wasn't safe here. I hovered down and realized there was no ocean, but what seemed like an ocean. It was gooey and green. I didn't have a good feeling about this. This place seemed lonely and scary like when you are in the middle of the sea. I decided to go back.

I entered the entertainment room and saw Jennifer putting on an astronaut's suit.

I asked her shyly, "Where are you going?"

"To see what's in the green gloop," she answered shortly.

"May I come with you?" I asked.

"Whatever," she answered.

She still seemed upset about Andrew yelling at her. I understood.

I quickly put on an astronaut's suit and soon we were in a cold, gooey slime that made your muscles sore from swimming in it. It was so thick that I couldn't see where I was going. I decided to turn back. I had to keep going to the surface to see what direction the ship was at. When I was about 10 feet away from our ship I felt something touch me on my side. I tried to see what it was, but the slime was too thick to see in. My stomach started to get butterflies like someone was watching me so I headed back to the ship as quickly as I could. When I got in the door I thought I saw three eyes stare at me for a few seconds then disappear.

When I got back to the entertainment room I saw Jennifer watching a video.

"Why did you come back in so quickly?" I questioned.

"I couldn't see anything in the green goop," she answered. "What took you so long?"

"Oh, nothing," I replied.

Just then Andrew came out of the shower.

"When are we going to leave here?" I had a look of eagerness in my eyes as I stared into my brother's face.

"Why do you want to leave? I just want to relax. What's wrong with this place?" he answered.

"Nothing," I said.

The rest of the day went by quickly because I was doing research work. When night came I couldn't sleep. I felt alone. My stomach had butterflies and I started to shiver. My skin was clammy. I wobbled to the window and looked out. I saw six glowing eyes looking and examining the ship.

Another three eyes were staring at me like it was killing me.

I wanted a better look so I got my flashlight and shined it outside. When I looked the nine eyes were gone. I suddenly felt normal again and very sleepy.

When I woke up I found my hands tied behind my back and my ankles tie together. My mouth was closed with what seemed like a handkerchief and

I seemed to be in a sac.

I could hear weird noises from outside the sac.

"Blah oo bli ble oal blab bub?" said the first thing. I thought something was wrong with my hearing.

"Blek obi eleo bobi blem ol bleb," answered another thing.

I suddenly realized that those things were aliens from this odd planet. They had a very unusual dialect.

After a while of listening to those strange noises I felt my sac get picked up. I was dropped on something hard like wood, which made my backache. I felt like I was on a boat. In what seemed like ten minutes we stopped somewhere. Just then I remembered Jennifer and Andrew. I hope they were okay.

I soon felt myself being lifted again. I could hear a lot of those weird voices so I thought I was in a village. I heard a door open and then my sac got dropped then became untied. I looked around and saw a round green creature with three eyes, two arms, and three legs untying me. On the other side of the room I could see Jennifer and Andrew being untied, too. Again I looked at the unusual creature untying me. It stared at me with its three glowing eyes. I started feeling clammy and cold. It finished untying me and I kicked it. Immediately, the feeling went away. I realized that these creatures had powers with their mind to make you feel ill. They have to be focused so if you distract them the feeling will stop.

It stared at me again and I kicked it. It gave up and followed the other two creatures going out the door. It slammed the door and locked it.

I crawled over to Andrew and asked, "What's going on?"

"I don't know," he answered trying to sound brave but sounding scared at the same time. "You're the scientist."

I saw Jennifer sitting in corner thinking. Sometimes she seemed braver than Andrew.

I got up and looked out the little window in the door. I saw houses or whatever the creatures called them made out of what looked like orange sand.

More towards the odd looking forest I saw a creature that had a crown on. I figured he must be the king.

By studying the way they lived I could tell they weren't very smart.

After studying them for about three days I figured out a way to escape. I explained it to Andrew and he agreed. That night, when the weird creature gave us our dinner, I took the utensil made out of wood. When it left I started digging in the hard sand. Andrew and Jennifer started helping. We soon finished our small tunnel. We snuck out knowing the creatures were asleep. We got to the green gloop shore and took a boat. Since the gloop was so thick we hardly made any noise. It took an hour to find our spaceship.

We refueled our ship quickly with the gooey ocean and got ready to take off, when we saw a whole army of the weird creatures coming towards us.

They started throwing little bombs with their hands but kept missing. I noticed the green ocean start to get upset because of the bombs. I stared at it as it was bubbling while Andrew and Jennifer started getting our bombs and guns.

"Wait," I yelled to them.

"What?" Andrew yelled back.

"The green ocean. Something is going to happen," I said.

They both grabbed a gun and came to the window. The creatures kept throwing bombs until one ordered them to stop. They looked at the ocean bubbling and became scared. They looked at us. I flinched getting ready to feel ill, but nothing happened. I looked back at them and realized they were looking at us like we were gods. They thought we did that to the ocean. The ocean soon stopped and the creatures rowed away with fear as quickly as they could.

I thought our trip was over, but for some reason I didn't feel us liftoff. I went to the cockpit and saw Jennifer and Andrew pointing their gun at creature. The creature was bowing down to us like gods.

I stepped up to it and said while pointing to myself, "Me, Thomas."

I figured it was a he so he said, "Me, Oblis?"

When he said that I realized they weren't as dumb as I thought they were. Jennifer and Andrew put their guns down. After that Oblis said, "I am spy of Oobleckans. Me spied you since came." "How did you learn to speak?" I asked him slowly.

"I learned from studying you three and reading dictionary book."

"Can you show us to your king?"

"I lead way."

He rowed us to the little island then led us to his king.

"What want me tell king?" Oblis asked.

"Tell him we are not gods, but will teach him our ways," I said.

Oblis turned to the king and said something in his language. All of a sudden, out jumped an Oobleckan and he started to worship us.

He said a weird chant in Oobleckan.

"Orbe," yelled the king.

Orbe ran to the king, while Oblis came to us.

He said, "King Oobla say he enjoy having schooling about your planet and language. Orbe, the Oobleckan who worship you is commander of army.

He bless you."

Suddenly he smiled, but it was so unusual for I haven't seen anyone in a long time.

We stayed and taught the Oobleckans for the rest of our lives and Jennifer and I got married. Unfortunately, none of our children went back to earth so that is why the planet Oobleck did not become known until someone many years later came to Oobleck.
