Instructional Procedure with Approximate Time Line
1. Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)
Begin class by having students close their eyes and clear their minds. Tell students to visualize a coconut tree blowing in the wind along a narrow strip of beach. There are small waves lapping on the sand and there are sea gulls flying overhead. Have students clear their minds. Begin passing out poems/stories.
Tell students to visualize a teddy bear on a bed. The desk lamp is casting a soft glow, lighting one side of the teddy bear. The pillow that is next to the teddy bear is fluffed and looks very inviting. Have students clear their minds.
Tell students to keep their eyes closed. When I tell them to, they will open their eyes and read the paper that is in front of them. There is to be no talking and students are to keep what is written on the paper a secret. Don't show or tell anyone. When they are finished reading the paper, whatever image forms in their mind, that is the picture I want them to paint. They will have two class periods to finish their paintings. Have students open their eyes, read their paper, and begin painting.
*Tell students to draw the symbol on the upper right hand corner of their paper onto their painting paper.
**Tell students that at the end of the period, they will hand back the piece of paper to me.
2. Art Activity (30 minutes)
The students will be allowed to sketch out their drawings before they begin painting. This painting will be graded on:
1. Size (use of the page)
2. Use of art principles and elements
3. Clean Up (last 10 minutes)
Ensure that the brushes are cleaned well and their cups are washed out.
Extension Activity
If a student finishes early, they may start on a new painting.
Other activities could be to illustrate a story and make it into a book, illustrate parts of stories, paint using techniques from history such as cubism or impressionism, or paint posters of a theme.
