Time Duration: 1 or 2 class period(s)

Unit Title: Drawing

Lesson Title: Two point Perspective.

Objectives of Lesson

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Define two-point perspective.

2. Use two-point perspective to draw the corner view of the art

building.

Materials Needed

1. Selected artworks showing two-point perspective.

2. Art notebooks and pencils.

3. Markerboard and felt tip pen.

4. 12" x 18" drawing paper.

5. Rulers or mat board (optional).

6. 3 cardboard boxes of different sizes.

7. Drawing boards (for 60 minute activity).

Instructional Procedure with Approximate Time Line

1. Anticipatory Set (3 minutes)

Begin class by telling students that we will be going outside to draw the corner of the art building using two-point perspective. Write on board that two-point perspective is any scene where the lines converge into two vanishing points.

2. Example (10 minutes)

Set up the boxes on the middle table. Tell students to draw the horizon line (eye level) in their notebooks (draw it on the board). Point out to students how the lines of the boxes disappear to two different vanishing points (vanishing points could be off the paper). Do an example of the still life on the board.

Have students draw boxes on the 12" x 18" paper if doing the 20 minute activity.

Have students draw boxes in their notebooks if doing the 60 minute activity.

3a. Art Activity 1 (20 minutes)

Have students finish the boxes in the still life on their own. If they have extra time, have them include such details as the table, shading, and texture.

3b. Art Activity (60 minutes)

Have students get a drawing board and take them outside to draw the corner of the art building. Help them set up the drawing by first locating the horizon line (eye level) and have them notice where the lines of the building are converging into the two vanishing points. The minimum is the building, including the windows and doors.

If they finish early, they can add details such as value, texture, background, trees, etc.

4. Clean Up (remainder of class)

Extra Credit Assignment

Have students do another two-point perspective drawing of their house or dorm. The assignment will be graded on size, accuracy, and use of technique. Adding things like value, texture, etc. will also be considered.
