Lesson Title: Design

Objectives of Lesson

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Visually render their ideas in thumbnail sketches.

2. Decide which sketch will be made into a print.

3. Draw design to scale on a 6" x 9" paper.

4. Make a portfolio to keep their work in.

Materials Needed

1. Selected linoleum prints for examples.

2. Students' art notebooks.

3. Pencils and pens.

4. 9" x 12" & 6" x 9" drawing paper.

5. Printmaking Instructions handout.

6. 18" x 24" paper for folder and stapler.

Instructional Procedure with Approximate Time Line

1. Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)

Begin class by telling students that they will be doing thumbnail sketches in their notebooks using pencil. They are to do at least five different sketches to show their idea. Tell students that their design will be graded on:

Show examples of linoleum designs. Point out how artist used different line weight and backgrounds in their prints.

Have students make their portfolios by folding two 18" x 24" papers and stapling each side using five staples. Ensure students write their names and code numbers on the outside of their portfolios.

2. Sketching (To be done as homework prior to lesson)

Have students do thumbnail sketches of their ideas they would like to do as a print.

3. Decide and Draw (35 minutes)

Have students decide on which thumbnail sketch best represents their idea. Draw image to scale on 6" x 9" paper. Ensure students get idea checked off with the teacher before proceeding to next step.
