Time Duration: 1 class period

Unit Title: Printmaking

Lesson Title: Positive/Negative Design

Objectives of Lesson

Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:

1. Transfer image from 6" x 9" paper to linoleum.

2. Shade design positive/negative using pen (positive/shaded areas

is raised areas which does the printing, negative/white areas are

the lines, shapes that are cut out).

Materials Needed

1. Carbon paper.

2. Stapler.

3. Linoleum cut to 6" x 9".

4. Pencils and pens.

5. Sketches.

6. Linoleum prints for examples.

Instructional Procedure with Approximate Time Line

1. Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)

Begin class by explaining that students must get the teacher's approval before shading their design. The design must be shaded using a felt tip pen. The shaded areas will be raised on the linoleum and will print. The negative areas will remain white and will be cut out on the linoleum.

2. Shading (10 minutes)

Show students examples of linoleum prints pointing out how the artists used contrast (black/white combinations) in their prints. Explain to students that when they have black on black (overlapping) in their design, they must have a white line to separate the overlapping objects. The white line must be thick enough so that it will be clearly seen or else it will look all black.

Have students shade their designs. Help students figure out which areas will be white/black.

3. Transfer (30 minutes)

Explain to students that when they print their design, the image will be reversed. If they want their image exactly as it is drawn, they must trace their design on carbon paper with carbon side up. Then they will trace that design onto their linoleum. Staple design and carbon paper (carbon side down) onto linoleum.

Ensure students write their names on the back of their linoleum.
