Time Duration: 2 class periods
Unit Title: Printmaking
Lesson Title: Carving Design
Objectives of Lesson
Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Cut out their design on linoleum safely.
2. Use the different size blades to cut their design.
Materials Needed
1. Linoleum cutters separated into buckets by size.
2. Linoleum block supports.
3. Scrap linoleum to practice on.
4. Linoleum with design drawn on it.
5. Oven to heat linoleum.
6. Bandages (each student bring three).
Instructional Procedure with Approximate Time Line
1. Anticipatory Set (5 minutes)
Call students around to demonstrate cutting linoleum. Explain to students that they will have three days to cut out their designs. They are not allowed to take the linoleum cutters home for any reason. They are not to take apart the linoleum cutter for any reason. If a blade needs to be changed, they are to bring the cutter to me and I will change the blade for them. This is to ensure that the piece inside the cutter is not lost. Emphasize to students that they should never cut towards their hand. Always cut away from your body and place your hand near the bottom edge of the linoleum.
Place the linoleum in the oven for 30 - 45 seconds, using gloves to take linoleum out. Place linoleum block support against edge of table, place linoleum on block support with top edge of linoleum flush against top of block support. Place hand at bottom edge of linoleum, cutting away from body. Tell students that the larger the blade number, the thicker the line it will cut. Tell students that to cut out large areas, they should use the largest blade.
Before students cut out their design, they should practice cutting out various shapes in their design (especially the difficult parts) using the scrap linoleum.
2. Cut (80 minutes)
3. Clean Up (last 5 minutes of class)
Dismiss students by tables ensuring they sweep the cut linoleum into the trash. Areas should be clean and designate students to ensure that there are no missing cutters.
