Time Duration: 3 class periods
Unit Title: Printmaking
Lesson Title: Printing
Objectives of Lesson
Upon completion of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Print their linoleum design using various colored inks and papers.
2. See how their design printed & make changes to design if needed.
3. Demonstrate this knowledge by printing five good prints of design
Materials Needed
1. Oven or heat gun to dry prints.
2. Drying rack if no oven is available.
3. Various colored inks (water soluble) and plastic knives/spoons.
4. Rollers to apply ink.
5. Plastic sheets for ink and roller.
6. 9" x 12" paper of various colors.
7. Slab roller, press, or rice paddles and spoons.
Instructional Procedure with Approximate Time Line
1. Anticipatory Set (10 minutes)
Tell students to gather in the ceramics room for demonstration on how to print. Tell students that they will have three days to print their designs. They must do at least five good prints which they will hand in for grading. Remind students that at the ending of this unit they will take a unit exam.
Use a plastic spoon or knife to get the ink out from the can and place the ink on the plastic sheet. The roller applies ink to the linoleum so roll it in the ink until an even coat covers the roller. Apply ink to the linoleum with the roller ensuring it covers the whole design. Pay close attention to the edges. Place roller on paper upside down.
Place linoleum on slab roller ink side up. Place a 9" x 12" paper over the linoleum and press it down lightly with your hand. Do not slide the paper or move it or else it will print blurry. Place a piece of felt over the paper. Roll the slab roller over the felt, remove the felt, and carefully peel off the paper. Place print on the drying rack. For quicker drying, place print in the oven for 10 - 15 seconds.
If no slab roller is available, a rice paddle or spoon is used to rub the paper on the linoleum.
2. Print (120 minutes)
Explain to students about double printing and using both sides of the paper to print if they misprint on one side (make sure they know that the first side is completely dry before printing on the back side).

3. Clean Up (last 5 minutes of last class)
Have students in the last class of the day clean up. Make sure they cover the ink cans well. They should wash off all the ink off the rollers, plastic sheets, spoons, etc. Have the students throw away the newspaper from the inking area and replace it with fresh newspaper.
4. Homework and turn in procedure
Assign students to write an analysis using the art critique procedure when they are finished printing their five good prints. Quickly review the four steps and what they include. The art critique will be put into their portfolio with their sketches, linoleum, and five good prints and hand it in to me for a grade. I will display the "A" prints.
5. Assessment
