Battle of Fort Sumter
Historian Page

Two of the main generals who fought in the battle of Fort Sumter were General Robert Anderson and General Pierre T. Beauregard. These were the very first generals who fought in the battle that began the Civil War.

Gen. Robert AndersonGeneral Robert Anderson lived in the south. Even though he lived in and loved the South he fought for the Union. This was because he did not believe in or agree with what the South was doing. So basically, he disagreed with slavery. Anderson was a kind and quiet man. He was married and had two kids. After his defeat at Fort Sumter he lowered the flag and put up the surrender flag. Over many other battles in the Civil War, he recaptured Fort Sumter and replaced the white flag with the United States flag. Anderson died on October 26, 1871 in Paris.

General Pierre T. Beauregard led the South to its first victory in the Battle of Fort Sumter. Beauregard was daring and bold. He had the decision of whether or not he should start the war. He ordered one of his officers in Fort Johnson to fire the first shot signaling the other Forts. This battle was not the only battle that Beauregard triumphed in, he also won a battle in Georgia. General Beauregard sadly died later on in his life on February 20, 1893 in New Orleans, LA.

Fort Sumter was a pretty important battle. It is not significant because it was the most bloodiest, or the most people died in this battle. It was the most significant of the Civil war, because it started the war. This battle began on April 12, 1861 at exactly 4:30 in the morning. At 3:20 that morning, General Beauregard sent a message to General Anderson warning him that they would open fire in an hours time. The first shot fired was ordered by Beauregard and it signaled the other Forts surrounding Fort Sumter to attack. No one in Fort Sumter lost a life during this battle at any time. The Fort was on fire and General Anderson had no more food or supplies. The only mistake he made was not firing back right away. He fired back at the Confederates three hours later at exactly 7:20 in the morning. The fighting continued and the Confederates did not cease firing until the next day, April 13, 1861 in the morning. The battle was over and the Confederates had gained a victory. Anderson could no longer put his troops in danger so he did the only thing he could do, surrender when he raised the white flag. Beauregard allowed Anderson to leave the Fort with all his men and their belongings, also their weapons.

The battle at Fort Sumter occurred in Charleston, South Carolina. In the middle of Charleston Harbor stood Fort Sumter.

The battle ended when the Fort was on fire and Anderson no longer wanted to risk the lives of his fifty soldiers. SO, Anderson lowered the United States flag and raised the white flag of truce.

Important events were still happening around the world, in the year 1861,while this battle was being fought, In Europe, Pedro the fifth of Portugal dies and Louis the first takes his place as King. In Asia, Manchu ruling is extremely weakened and Taipan decides to rebel them at this time. The most immigrationmovement of Germans from Polland to Volhynia, takes place in South America. And last of all, in the Country of Africa, the British becomes present in modern Nigeria and the British begin influencing their religion.
