Brief Description of Important People

- Peter J. Osterhaus's family settled in the United States
in the year of 1850. Osterhaus was a Union commander for many different divisions
during the Battle of Pea Ridge.

- Jefferson C. Davis, before fighting in the civil war, was apart of the Mexican
War (only exceeded to lieutenant). Davis was a very jealous man, so when his friend
was appointed his superior he murdered him in cold blood. However, he was not charged
for the killing and was appointed Brigadier General Davis during the Civil War.

-, During the Civil War, Eugene A. Carr was awarded the Congressional Medal
of Honor for his excellent strategies or tactics. Shortly after the civil war, Carr
retired as general in 1893, he was a well- known hero.
-When
his father died, Thomas C. Hindman moved his family to Mississippi where he wanted
to practice law (even at a young age he had a great fascination for law and politics).
However, the Lord had different plans for him. At the age of 15 he was appointed
lieutenant. During the Civil war, Hindman was defeated in the battle of Prairie Grove,
this occured shortly after Pea Ridge. He was murdered in his own home in the year
of 1868 at the age of 40 (the culprit was not found).

- Samuel R. Curtis, during the Mexican War, was under the influence of General
Zachary Taylor. For the Civil War he was automatically appointed Brigadier General
Curtis. He still remains among the more unappreciated contributors to the Federal
war effort.

- Earl Van Dorn was a great soldier with Indian battle experience. During
the Mexican War he was promoted twice and loyally served the Confederate states.
During the Battle of Pea Ridge, Van Dorn ran out of ammunition and fled from the
battlefield. His wife's former husband, out of jealousy and rage, shot Earl Van Dorn
to death.

- Ben McCulloch was a great servant and loyal friend to General Zachary Taylor
during the Mexican war. One year before the Battle of Pea Ridge McCulloch defeated
one of the armies from the North. He was one of the many killed during the Battle
of Pea Ridge.
- James McIntosh was the friend and companion of Ben McCulloch during the civil war.
They were apart of the Van Dorn regiment and eventually helped run the commissions
that Van Dorn appointed. After McCulloch died, McIntosh went on to bigger and better
things, he retired as Major General McIntosh. (NO PICTURE AVAILABLE)

The Battle of Pea Ridge was caused by the federal efforts to secure control of
the border state, Missouri. The evening of March sixth, Major General Van Dorn was
ready to set out to maneuver around and behind the union position. The federals learned
of Van Dorn's approach and marched North to meet his divided army. This stopped the
Rebel attack because two Generals were killed. Van Dorn led his second army to meet
the federals in The Elkhorn Tavern. The confederates controlled both Elkhorn Tavern
and Telegraph Road by nightfall. The following day, Major General Samuel R. Curtis
counterattacked near the Elkhorn Tavern and carefully, but slowly, forced the Rebels
back. This battle was one of the major battles where Native Americans made a major
difference in the outcome. Major General Van Dorn ran short of ammunition and quickly
departed the battlefield. The results of the Battle of Pea Ridge was the Union victory,
they controlled Missouri for the next two years.
