Environmental Conditions During the Battle of Pea Ridge, the weather was cold, in the mid-fourties to the low fifties. The temperatures stayed pretty similar to now days, but it was a little colder at the time. Precipitation was similar too. The only difference was a late blizzard that blew through a few days before, so the soldiers had to march through snow to get to the battlefield. Topograph Weapons The 12 LB Smoothbore Muzzle loading gun is another name for a 12 LB cannon. It was used by both sides during the war because it was light weight, durable and had a range of 2000 yards. It was so used that it hurled more solid shot, case shot, grape shot, and canister than all of the other ordinances of the war combined. The barrel was cast in bronze or iron and was raised or lowered by a elevating screw. The cannon its self carried its own rammer, sponge, leather grease bucket, and rope for hauling. Every gun had a limber, which is basically ammunition of wheels. In action, the limber stood behind the gun, but when it was on the move, the gun was towed behind it. Both the cannon and limber were towed by a 6 horse team.
