First Battle of the Ironclads

painting

The Battle of Hampton Roads occured in Virginia on March 8&9 of 1862. This battle was fought in the a channel of the James River. Ironclads are the warships that were used in this battle. Because these ships were recently invented, this was the way the Confederates and Unions tested them out. Cannons and a few guns were used aboard to shoot at the opposing side. This was a very interesting battle; both sides had their ups and their downs. (Go to Historian Page for more information)
