Surgical supplies during the Civil War were very scarce. They didn't have many instruments. Many men died because of disease. They did not steralize their instruments during the war because they did not know that diseases could be spread through contact with infected blood. A doctor would be educated to take care of sickness and injury. A doctor would
usually carry a small box with little things in it. Doctors would carry some bandages
that would be usd for injury and to wipe the instruments. The doctors were usually
men. He would also carry a scaple, a few pins, a bandage, and some opium. A doctors medical cabinet would contain some medications and sulphur and opium. He would use these as anestesia. That is also what he used as his pain killers. There was not a school for surgeons. Surgeons came out of medical school and used their knowledge to work with any situation that they were faced with. They were very skilled doctors. Most surgeons were males, yet most nurses were female. They needed to know what they were doing at the time. Like doctors, surgeons did not steralize their instruments. Between patients, surgeons would rinse their hands in a bowl of water which they kept near by. Then they would wipe their hands on a peice of cloth. They would hardly ever rinse or change the water in the bowl. Surgeons carried an assortment of scissors and knives. They also carried a needle and thread. Surgeons carried with them little supplies. Confederate Surgeons carried around the most supplies out of all the doctors.
They carried around prosthesis. Prosthesis is fake limbs for people. This was used
to give people a limb which lost them. They would strap the prothesis on and the
soldier would go back and fight. Another thing that confederate soldiers carried
was pill mold. This was used to put opium and sulfur in a pill to make pills for
those who could not stand the smell. The confederate soldiers also carried measuring
scales to measure medications. The weather throught out June 25- July 1, 1862 was very cloudy. There was a thick could of smoke and it seemed to block out the sun. There was a near by river called Chickahominy River that they fought by. They also fought on a bridge called meadow bridge. Richmond, Virginia is a very hilly and grassy place. It seemed like htey fought on a feild of grass and many hills. There was very little trees in that area. One of the battles was fought near White Oak Swamp. The temperature should have ranged from 66 to 69 degrees farenheit.
