The Battle of 2nd Bull Run
Historian Page

Robert E Lee
On August 29 and 30, 1862 the Battle of 2nd Bull Run occurred in Manassas. The two leading generals were Robert E. Lee and John Pope. Lee led the south and John Pope led the north. Pope wasn't really familiar with the area so he had a disadvantage. Lincoln considered Pope one of his largest mistakes during the war. He treated his soldiers and prisoners harshly and he made several preventable military mistakes. He didn't like to listen to others, making and carrying out his own plans. Robert E. Lee was the confederacy's greatest soldier, entered West Point in 1829, standing second in his class. He specialized in military engineering, and for several years he supervised various construction projects for army.

John Pope tried to take Richmond. Both rivals were face to face when Stonewall Jackson, with 23,000 troops, came eastward through Thoroughfare Gap and approached Pope's forces from behind. Stunned, Pope retreated northward where he finally joined up with General George Brinton McClellan and his forces. Jackson and Lee went across the Potomac river and headed for Washington. Lee sent Stuart to raid the union camp. Stuart did it happily because he lost his hat during a dispute with the union soldiers. He walked out of Pope's headquarters with Pope's dress coat, $350,000, and the general's book containing the positions of his men. They attacked Pope's forces from the back, it was another win for the confederacy's.

PopeDuring the time of the battle there were other events going on all over the world. In Europe, German botanist, Julious Von Sachs proved that starch is produced by photosynthesis. Cochin China or southern Vietnam becomes a French colony. In South America there's a war with Peru and Spain. .In New Zealand there was the second Maori War.
