Who Were the Generals?

General Robert E. LeeThere were two important generals in the Battle of Antietam. One general was General Robert E. Lee. Robert E. Lee was the general for the confederates in this battle because he could not go against his home state and his family. Robert E. Lee went to West Point in 1825 and graduated second in his class without any demerits.

General George B. McClellanThe general for the Union in this battle was General George B. McClellan. He attended West Point in 1842 and also graduated second in his class in 1846. Later, he became the commander of the Ohio forces in the Civil War.

What Happened?

On September 16, 1862 Major General McClellan met General Robert E. Lee on the first day of one of the bloodiest battles in Civil War history. On September 17, 1862 at dawn General Joseph Hooker fired on the left side of the Confederate army in Antietam. When the Confederate army got reinforced they gained back part of the field and this kept going back and forth. General McClellan fought General Lee along a road that was separating the Roulette and Piper farms, also known now as Bloody Lane. More men died at Bloody Lane and Antietam than at any other battle during the Civil War.

When Did This Battle Occur?

The Battle of Antietam lasted from September 16th in the morning to the 17th at night.

Where Was the Battle?

This battle happened in Maryland near Atietam Creek and a town called Sharpsburg. Sometimes the battles were called different names because the Union named their battles after the nearest body of water and the Confederate named the battles after the nearest town.

Why Did This Battle Happen?

There are many important reasons why this battle started. One is because Robert E. Lee wanted to keep going into the North because he felt confident when he won at the Bull Run. But, the more important reason is that he wanted countries in Europe, such as, England and France to help the South and the Confederates with their cause.

How Did it End?

In this battle the Union Army won. We know this because Lee started the retreat back to the Potomac River. When this battle ended it changed the course of the war, now the war was not only to support the Union, it also wanted to free the slaves. The slaves were freed when Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation. Also one of the reasons this battle started was because the south wanted recognition from Europe and when the North won this battle it caused Great Britain to think twice before joining the Confederacy.

Other Things that Were Happening on Different Continents

Otto Von Bismarck became the Prime Minister of Prussia on Europe.

The independence of Zanzibar was recognized by Great Britain and France in Africa.

On Asia Cochin-China became a French Protectorate.

On Australia an one sided medal was made for the Colony of Victoria that represented Victoria as a classical goddess.
