Battle of Murfreesboro William Rosecran born in Kingston, Ohio, September 6, 1819. Studied at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and then Graduaing in 1842 he joined the United States Army. On the outbreak of the Aerican Civil War Rosecran joined the Union Army and was commissioned as a colonel in the Ohio Volunteers. In December 1862, Rosecran moved his army towards Chattanooga. On December 31 by Murfreesboro Braxton Bragg attacked Rosecran. Rosecran was able to hold his position for the next days and on the night of January 3, 1863, Bragg and his Army of Tennessee retreated to Tullahoma. It is estimated that the Union Army lost 12,906 men in the battle. Septembe 1863 at Chickamuga he made a serious tactical blunder that opened up a gap in the Union Army lines. After the war Rosecrans returned to politics and represented California in the House of Representatives (1881-85) and served as register of the U.S. Treasury. William Rosecran died on March 11, 1898.
Braxton Bragg was born 8in Warrenton, North Carolina, on March 21, 1817. He was educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and Graduated in 1837. He fought the Seminole War and won three brevets in the Mexican War (1846-48). On the outbreak of the Amerian Civil War he became a mojor general in the Confederate Army.. On June 26, 1862, bragg replaced Pierre eauregard as the commander ofthe Army of Tennessee. Then he entered Kentucky and fought at Perryville October 1862. December 1862 General William Rosecrans moved his army of the Cumberland toward Chattanooga. Bragg confronted them at Murfreesboro, on Stones River. He attacked Rosecran. Rosecrans was in deep danger, but Rosecrans was able to hold his position for the next two days the night of January 3, 1863, Bragg and his army had retreated to Tullahoma. There war 11,739 Confederate men that died in the battle. September 19, 1863, bragg led his troops to attack union armies. The army was led by George H.. Thomas and William Rosecrans at Chickamuga. Durning the battle the Union Army lost 16,170 men (1,657 killed, 9,756 wounded, and 4,757 missing). Then Confederate Army lost 18,484(2,312 killed, 214,674 wounded, and 1,468 missing). After the war Gragg worked as a civil engineer in Alabama and Texas. Braxton Bragg died September 27, 1876.
BLOODY BATTLE Bragg's men atttacked the Union right flank. Then Confederates had driven the union line back to the Nashville Pike. Union reinforcements arrived from Rosecans left in the late forenoon. On new Years day, both armies marked time. Bragg surmised that Rosecrans would now withdraw. Bragg hurled a division that , on January 1, had crossed Stones River and had aken up a strong position on the bluff east of the river. The Confederates drove most of the federals back across McFadden's Ford, the Federals repulssed the attack, compelling the Rebels to retire to their original position. Bragg left the field on January 4-5, retreating to Shelbyville and tullahoma, Tennessee. Rosecrans did not pursue, but as the Confederates retired, so Rosecrans claimed the victory. Confederates been thrown back in the east, west, and in the Trans-Mississippi. Confederate counteroffensive brought a quick end to Union's winter advance towards Chatanooga but entirely failed to destroy Federal army. VICTORY! The Union had won the battle because Generl Braxton Bragg who is on the Confederate Army had retreated.
