Pneumonia

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is the inflammation (swelling) of the lungs. The lungs are filled with pus or other liquid. Because of the liquid, oxygen can't get to the red blood cells. The following is the process in which this disease occurs:

  • The walls of the air sacs are destroyed.
  • Red blood cells, plasma, and white blood cells fill the sacs.
  • The area of the lung that this is occurring now becomes inoperable.

The usual symptoms for pneumonia are fever, chills, cough, chest pain, an increasing amount of sputum (matter coughed up), sweating, aching, expectoration of blood, and difficultly in breathing.

Pneumonia can be caused by a number of agents. One of these are viruses, believed to be the cause for about half of all pneumonia. Another agent is bacteria and now can be treated with antibiotics. Another agent is mycoplasma. It is classified as a bacteria, but is shapeless and shows signs of being both virus and bacteria. Pneumonia can also be caused from inhaling various dust and gases.
