The Beginning of the End

The Assault on Vicksburg marked the beginning of the end for the Confederates as well as the Union. Here General Ulysses S. Grant led a siege against the Southerners. After his first loss at Vicksburg he moved his army up the Mississippi River to a spot where is was safe to cross. The Union traveled around the town and achieved surprise and began their attacks.
For 47 days the town of Vicksburg was bombarded with bombs. Civilians as well as the soldiers were trapped without anyway of escape, other than to surrender. People were forced to eat rats, shoe leather, and weeds. Finally on the 47 day the Confederates surrendered.
The once growing, thriving town of Vicksburg was now a desolate town filled with sorrow. But for the Union, they now controlled the Mississippi and all things that came through it.
