battlefield Lee Meade

In the more than 2,000 land battles in the Civil War, Gettysburg ranks as one of the best fought battles on American soil. Although the battle of Gettysburg did not end the war nor was it any major war aim for the North or the South, this was an important battle. The war lasted for two more brutal years, but the Confederacy never recovered from the great loss at Gettyburg. It is said that more men have fought and died at Gettysburg than in any other battle before or since on North American soil. Gettysburg is deemed the turning of the Civil war.

Actually, Gettysburg only fought because the two armies met by chance. General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Brigade was sent forward to get supplies and charged head on into the Union Army of the Potomac headed by General George G. Meade. But that is a battle that we will never forget. President Abraham Lincoln made a speech of the great loss from both sides of this battle.

I hope these next pages help you to learn more about the battle of Gettysburg.
