Battle of Spotsylvania

The Battle of Spotsylvania took place next to spotsylvania court house. There were two major generals of the Battle of Spotsylvainia. Commanding all United States armies from a headquarters in the field with the Army of the Potomac General was Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. He was nominated by president Abraham Lincoln. The other was General Robert E Lee who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. The battle of Spotsylvania was12 miles southeast of the battlefeild up the wilderness.

Grant At 6:30 A.M. on May 7, Grant issued a directive to the Army of the Potomac commander, Major General George Gordon Meade. "General: Make all preparations during the day for a night march to take position at Spotsylvania Court-House."

On May 7 and 8, during the night, the Union Fifth Corps and the Confederate First Corps led their aremies toward the Court house. They ,moved independantly and didn't know each others movements. The Union came from the north while the Confederates came from the south. As soon as they met at their battle stations, they battled. Their weapons were the Vandenburgh Volley Gun. The battle was as long as 13 days, from May 8 to May 21. The Union was winning and the Confederates were losing. This battle was known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil war.

What else was going on during the Battle of Spotsylvania?

  • In Asia, from 1850-1864 Taiping rebelliaon occured in the China area.
  • In Europe, Poles rebel against Russian rule, the increasing of European settlements threaten Native Americans.
  • In the Western part of the United States, was the last war against Native Americains, and from 1863-1867 the French invaded Mexico and set up Austrian archduke Maximilian as the emperor of Mexico.
  • In Austraila, The Second Maori war occured in New Zealand, and the First French convicts were sent to New Caledonia.
