Battle of Spotsylvania

The Battle of Spotsylvania took place next to spotsylvania court house. There
were two major generals of the Battle of Spotsylvainia. Commanding all United States
armies from a headquarters in the field with the Army of the Potomac General was
Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant. He was nominated by president Abraham Lincoln.
The other was General Robert E Lee who commanded the Army of Northern Virginia. The
battle of Spotsylvania was12 miles southeast of the battlefeild up the wilderness.

At 6:30 A.M. on May 7, Grant issued a directive to the Army of the Potomac commander,
Major General George Gordon Meade. "General: Make all preparations during the
day for a night march to take position at Spotsylvania Court-House."
On May 7 and 8, during the night, the Union Fifth Corps and the Confederate First
Corps led their aremies toward the Court house. They ,moved independantly and didn't
know each others movements. The Union came from the north while the Confederates
came from the south. As soon as they met at their battle stations, they battled.
Their weapons were the Vandenburgh Volley Gun. The battle was as long as 13 days,
from May 8 to May 21. The Union was winning and the Confederates were losing. This
battle was known as one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil war. |
