Battle of Spotsylvania Scientist Page Weather The battle of Spotsylvania was from May 8 to 21 year 1864. It was fought in partly cloudy weather. The temperature was 50 to 75 degrees. This is weather that we normally expect for this time of year.  Weapons A weapon used in the Civil War was the ConfederateVandenburgh Volley Gun. It was invented by General Origen Vandenburgh of the New York militia. He only sold one to the Confederate Army. This gun can fire 85 barrels. The 85 barrels are .5 inches across. It is used by loading it with amunition then turning the handle. The other version of this gun that was sold in England and reconstructed can fire 121 bullets at once.             Legend Blue: Union Red:Confederate This is the map of the movement of the two armies who eventually ended up at Spotsylvania.
