Weapons:

rifles

When the war started in 1861 there was only a certain amount of small arms. When the people started to sign up there was not enough arms to go round. Both armies had purchasing agents buying all the European rifles they could get their hands on. There were solders using weapons that dated back to the War of 1812. The American rifle makers like Sharps, Colt, Remington and the United States armory at Springfield were rapidly widening the rifle production. By the year 1855 the rifle had evolved into having, a barrel that had grooves running down the barrel so the bullet would spin while exiting.
