The Big Mahalo Page
Here are the people that helped bring this project to
fruition:
Rick
Heyd, owner of more ties than Imelda Marcos has shoes, is
the Social Studies teacher on our team. When not filling in
the role of General Lee in our re-enactment of Pickett's
Charge, Rick regales the troops with synopses of "The Great
Race," which he watches during commercial breaks for "The
West Wing." Rick is also responsible for teaching the troops
how to march and the importance of not breaking ranks, no
mean feat with the fusillade of Union balloons they
face.
Kelli
Lyau is the Math teacher for our team. Kelli's two claims to
fame are the ability to run for distances that most of us
would only consider if pusued by large rabid carnivores and
a teacup that can hold all of Lake Superior. Okay, the last
statement is an exaggeration; it can only hold Lake Erie.
Kelli's role on the battle field is to instruct the troops
in the art of grinding their own coffe beans, and then hide
her giggles as she watches them choke down the
concoction.
Becky
Dodini, our team's English teacher, completes her final tour
of duty with us this year. Quatermaster for the troops,
Becky makes sure they are well-armed, then pats them on the
head and sends them off to certain inundation. We've all
learned a great deal from her, but perhaps the most
important lesson is never to pass up well-timed snacks.
Becky will be nominated for sainthood (or at least a new
visual prescription) later this year in recognition of her
reading literally hundreds of journal entries by
enthusiastic, if less-than-proficient, students.
Paul
Fradale, the man, the myth, the recently-escaped from his
padded cell. Paul plays General Meade on the field of battle
when not teaching the students about lava, supernovae, and
the trajectory of rubber bands when shot at people. Along
with Mr. Lai, Paul monitors the intense games of horseshoes
the the troops enjoy prior to battle. Rumor has it he has
been developing new field artillery to seriously pummel the
Confederates this year.
Wonlyn
Ching is the PPA for our team. While some might hold that
PPA is the acronym for paraprofessional aide, we believe
that PPA must be a top-secret government code for
superheroes that walk among us. Wonlyn is a logistics
magician; pity the army that go against any forces she
organizes!
Andrew
Lai. Capricorn. Famed purveyor of Cheezie Wheezies. Andrew
is the speech teacher for our school and plays General Hunt
to Mr. F's General Meade, though the students like to think
of him as more of a General Hooker. In addition to
supervising the aforementioned horseshoes, Mr. Lai also does
an excellent job of inciting the Union troops to a fever
pitch prior to battle.
Blaine
Fergerstrom is the Educational Webmaster and general wizard.
Several students have reported seeing him walk on water, but
these reports are unconfirmed. Blaine created the template
and directories, processed the MIDI files, and acted as
general counsel throughout the project. It is our hope the
Kamehameha Schools realizes that he is invaluable to us just
where he is.
Darrin
Sato is an IT liaison for the school, which supports his
triathlon addiction. Darrin has helped the team with IT
integration in the past and really helped the students
during this project. In future we would like to lure him
onto the battlefield since we can always use more
targets.
Trevis
Tagawa is another IT resource we tap on a regular basis.
Sadly, he did not respond to our request for his picture in
time, and had to pay the price. Trevis was instrumental in
the initial planning of this project, acting as a sounding
board for the many ideas that were suggested.
Eric
Kane. The very name strikes fear into the hearts of faculty
and students alike as he holds to power to block them from
the school server at a whim. Director of the computer lab,
Eric also has a son on our team and will be sending him into
battle shortly. Quite willingly, we might add.
(Clockwise
from top left) Ruth Matsumoto, Grace Omura, Charlene
Hamaguchi, and Karen Mitchell, also known as the LC Divas,
are in our opinion the best librarians around. They
gathered an amazing amount of resources for the students to
use in this project and let us invade the LC on a regular
basis throughout the project. A little-known fact about
them is that they have anti-freeze for blood, a necessity
for the sub-zero environment in which they work.
The
Mighty Orange. Is it Istanbul or Constantinople? Like that
famous city our team is fated to soon change. With Becky's
retirement and Kelli's transfer to another team, this
project is our swan song. Through ups and downs over many
years we have worked and relaxed together as few teams do
and now leave at the top of our game. It's been one heck of
a ride, folks.
