PROCESS

Video Filming

1. Before getting your camera, do a final check of all necessary items and group roles. Make sure all members are aware of their roles and lines. Every group member should have a copy of the script and storyboard. Check for all necessary props.

2. Look over the resources provided to gain tips on good filming techniques. These sites will help you to make the most of your video time, get good shots, and make editing easier.

3. Prepare cue cards. Each new scene should have a card that will show you which scene you are shooting. You should number the cards according to your storyboard. This will help when you edit so that you will be able to identify each scene, especially if you shoot your video out of sequence.

4. Determine who is shooting each scene and what sequence you will be shooting. You must write the camera person's name on each cue card. Show your prepared materials to the teacher.

5. Sign out your camera. Each member of the group will be responsible for the camera at all times. You must sign out the camera every time you use it and sign it back in upon your return. Your DV tape will always be kept in class.

6. Remember that class time goes by very quickly. You must get all of your shots within the designated filming time (see due dates below). Work together to get all of your scenes done. Do not re-do a scene more than 2 times. If you have time later to go back then you can re-do the scene. This will insure that you will get all of your scenes completed.

7. IMPORTANT TIP: Remember that whenever you stop and start the camera, you should tape for 5-10 seconds. Example: start the camera...tape 5-10 seconds, do your scene, tape another 5-10 seconds, then stop the camera. This will help you in editing. REMEMBER TO ALWAYS USE YOUR CUE CARDS!

8. All filming must be completed by: Tuesday, March 1.

Video Editing

1.After you are done filming, you will need to download your raw footage to the hard drive. Each group will be assigned 1 computer in the classroom. This will be the only computer you will use for the duration of this project.

2. Use the resources provided to help in the editing process. Please visit the Atomic Learning site to watch video on how to use iMovie3.

3. There should only be 2 students at a time on the computer. Within your group, determine the rotation of the editing process. Every student must edit at least 1 portion of the video. Each student is responsible for editing the scenes that they filmed.

4. Editing should be done mostly in class. There will be very limited 8th period time. Certain days and times will be designated for particular sections and group members.

5. Remember to include all the necessary parts in the final product of your video. Refer to the evaluation rubric.

6. Save transitions, titles, music, and effects for after the video is put together.

7. IMPORTANT TIP: Do not delete or cut any of your video clips. ALWAYS USE COPY AND PASTE. NEVER CUT OR TRASH RAW FOOTAGE.

8. Don't forget your credits and copyright. You should only use copyright free music from the resources provided. If time permits, you will also be able to use Garage Band to create your own music files. No copyrighted music is allowed.

9. Final video due: Friday, March 11.

"Unwanted Flyer/Brochure"

1. After filming, you will also be required to create an "unwanted" flyer or brochure for your species. This flyer or brochure should reflect what your video is talking about. Please see the rubric for complete grading criteria.

The flyer or brochure must include the following:

Title: UNWANTED: "Name of species" (Both common and scientific)

Graphics: Pictures of the species (if taken from a source, remember to include reference)

WHO: Description of physical characteristics

WHY: Description of why it is "unwanted" in Hawaii

THREATS: Description of the threat it causes, and the important facts that people should know about this species

HOW TO HELP: Description of the solutions to stopping this alien species. Include at least 1 organization and phone number to contact for more information or to report this pest.

2. The flyer or brochure may be done individually or as a group. Grades will be given accordingly. If working in a group, a group grade will be given. Groups of 2 or 3 are also acceptable.

3. You should work on the flyer or brochure while the other members are editing.

4. The flyer/brochure will be due with the video on Friday, March 11.
