PROCESS

1. Each student will be required to use a minimum of 5 internet sites AND a combination of 2 books, expert interviews, or other sources for information. All of the internet sites provided are acceptable sources. Any other sites will need teacher approval.

2. According to your assignment, you will need to research the answers to the following questions:

Student A (Problem/Issue)

Who is involved in this problem (invasive species, native species, organizations, etc.)?
What is the main problem that all invasive species cause?
What problem does this particular species cause?
What is the importance of stopping invasive species from invading Hawaii?
Where is this problem occurring (name of islands, other places around the world, description of species habitat and locations here and abroad)?
If this species is already here in Hawaii, when and where did this problem start? If it is not in Hawaii, where is it a problem?
How did this species get introduced to the islands or how would it be introduced if it isn't here already?

Student B (Species)
:
What is the scientific name of this species? Common name?
Where is the natural environment of this species? (Climate, habitat, native country)
Describe its physical features. What does it look like? (Size, physical characteristics)
What does it eat or need to survive?
Describe its reproductive method, cycle, dispersal, and growth rate.
What is the unique or distinguishing characteristics or how can you tell them apart from other species?
What are the natural predators of this species?
Find several good pictures of this species and get copyright permission to use the pictures. (Attach the permission to your research)

Student C (Impact)

Which native animals are or will be threatened by this alien species? Give examples and explain how they are affected.
How have all alien species threatened the native animals, plants and/or environment so far? (Give specific examples)
How has this particular species threatened or will potentially threaten the native plants and animals?
What is the current status of this species' impact on the native environment and/or other environments? (Specify which islands, states, other countries)
Describe how this species can affect human health, agriculture and the economy.
Based on your research, make a hypothesis about the potential threat or damage to the environment if nothing is done to stop this alien species?

Student D (Solutions)

What is currently being done to stop this alien species? List all current actions.
Explain the importance of protecting our islands from this species.
Explain what can be done to stop this species from invading. Give at least 3 specific examples.
Explain what can be done to help stop all alien species from invading our environment.
Which organizations are working to help this cause? List at least 3 organizations.
What proposals have been made to help this cause (by the government, organizations, etc.).
Where can you go or who can you call to get more information about this species? (Provide name, address, contact person, and phone number if available). List at least 3 organizations and make contact via phone or email to check if these sources are valid. Write the name of the contact person or attach the email to your research.

3. Use the forms for note taking for website resources (pdf), note taking for book resources (pdf), and note taking for newspapers/magazines (pdf) to guide your note taking. Also refer to the guidelines for recording of bibliography information(pdf).

4. Each person will be graded separately upon completion of the research. The following will be due on February 2(ODD), 3(EVEN). You will turn in:

  a. All note taking sheets (Separate notes for each resource used)
b. Bibliography (Written in correct format)
c. Summary of information (Summary of facts to answer all questions)
Student A Questions (pdf)   Student B Questions (pdf)   Student C Questions (pdf)   Student D Questions (pdf)
