Young paddlers that are testing their skills at a game called Pākā Wa‘a or canoe surfing. There are many different types of canoes but in this case they are using a wa‘a kaukahi or single-hulled outrigger canoe. This sport is done with four people and to move the canoe they use paddles made out of wood. Most of the paddles were made of koa wood. Pākā Wa‘a is like surfing but they used canoes to act as their surfboards. Surfing is a sport in which, a person stands on a surfboard ranging from a long to a short board and with the board they glide on the waves while standing on top of the board. Surfing takes a lot of practice and balance. This sport is like a race and is known as Hawai‘is sport. A lot of people still enjoy it today but not traditionally like how they have done before. Instead of wood, the boards today are made out of foam like material. The boards are also made a little smaller than before, but some are long too.

SCRIPTURE: Psalms 65:7
You quieted the raging oceans with their pounding wave sand silenced the shouting of the nations. Ka mea i ho
omalielie i ka halulu ana o na kai.

Ōlelo Noeau
Ho a‘e ka ‘ike he‘enalu i ka hokua o ka ‘ale: Show [your] knowledge of surfing on the back of the wave. Talking about one’s knowledge and skill is not enough; let it be proven
