He hā‘awe pili

He hā‘awe pili: Carriers of bundles of pili.


Women are gathering large quantities of pili, (grass used for thatching) and carrying it in bundles to kahua hale (house site). These bundles aho (thatching sticks) to make the walls and roofs of the kahua hale.
Carriers of pili were women who lived in our near the kula, or the sloping land between the uka (mountains) and kai (sea).

Pili was used to thatch hale because it adapted to the rain.
