Hina, Maui's mother was on a long vacation in Hawai’i. While Hina was gone, Maui went to see his grandmother in Haleakala. Maui also went there because his grandmother had grandmother’s magic. That meant she could have all the food she wanted without ever running out.

So, right after Maui had finished gathering fish and doing his chores, he laid the fish down and sat under a wiliwili tree. Just then he looked into the sky and saw a warning cloud. He asked his grandmother about it and asked her why it was there and his grandmother sent him with his magic axe and snares to Hina’s cave because the cloud was a sign that she was in trouble. Running as fast as he could, Maui got to Hina's cave

When he got there, he saw that Kuna Loa, their enemy, harassing Hina. So then, he broke the dam and Kuna Loa slithered out very quickly. After Maui was finished with Kuna Loa, he went back to his mother’s cave to tend to her. When she was fine and settled, he went back to his grandmother's home in Haleakala.

Just then the warming cloud was back again and once more he sprinted to Hina’s cave leaping over rocks and hills. When he got there with no surprise it was Kuna Loa again. They started to battle but with one swing of his axe, he cut Kuna Loa into lots of pieces and they lived hapily ever after without Kuna Loa bothering them ever again.
