The story of The Girl Who Gave Breadfruit is about a girl who comes upon an old woman, and is warned about strange things that will be happening on top the volcano. The old woman is actually Pele, the fire goddess

The story starts off with the girl and her friend who are cooking breadfruit when an old woman appears. The younger girl offers the woman some breadfruit, in which the woman takes. She then tells them that they should hang bits of kapa around their homes for ten days because there will be strange things happening on the volcano.

Seven days later the volcano erupts, but the family does not leave their home because their grandmother told them that it was Pele who warned them and that they should not doubt her. As the lava came closer to their home, it split into two trails and went around their home. The family then gave thanks and prayers to Pele for sparing their lives and home.
