The Ghost Dance on Punchbowl

retold by Brianna
Adapted from " The Ghost Dance on Punchbowl" from Teller of Hawaiian Tales by
Eric Knudsen.

This legend is about ghosts dance on Punchbowl. But they are really not
ghosts they are actually amakua’s. Amakua’s help to protect the Hawaiian
families.

The legend begins, one night long ago, Keoni and his went fishing. But,
the fish just were not biting that night, so they decided to go home. As they
walked home Keoni’s friend asked him if he would like to stay the night because
it was getting late and his house was far away. So as they were getting toward
his house (at the foot of punchbowl), Keoni looked up at the mountains and he
saw a wisp of smoke. But it wasn’t just a wisp of smoke it was the amakua’s.
Since Keoni was already disturbed by all of this, his friend told him another
legend that kind of tied in with all of this and it told him a little more about how
the amakua’s work! So as the friend was telling him this interesting story it kept
him busy. They were getting closer to the house, so as Keoni glanced another
time at the Mountain View he saw it another time, he ran into the house. Then
he finally relaxed that it wasn’t just any wisp of smoke form a little fire it was the
amakua’s once again!
