A Shark Punished at Waikiki

From "A Shark Punished at Waikiki" from Legends of Hawaii: Yesterday's O'ahu by Pilahi Paki.

Retold here by David

INTRODUCTION:

This legend is about a little yellow shark with great wisdom and magical powers named Ka-ehu from the shores of Oÿahu. Ka-ehu was swimming along the shores of the island Oÿahu. Suddenly, Ka-ehu stumbled upon one of the most dangerous sharks known to Ka-ehu’s time, a vicious man eating shark from the island of Maui who belonged to Honoka-hau named Pehu.

Ka-ehu decided to swim over to Pehu. Ka-ehu asked Pehu what he was doing swimming in the shores of Oÿahu. Pehu told Ka-ehu that he was looking for a succulent crab to eat. Ka-ehu offered Pehu Ka-ehu’s group and his own assistance with the hunt for the crab. Ka-ehu told Pehu to swim over to the reef and wait while Ka-ehu “caught the crab”.

Now… Ka-ehu will do the one thing that no willing person had ever done before. Ka-ehu will finish Pehu off… for good. Will Ka-ehu be able to stop this terrible tyrant from committing a masicure? Can Ka-ehu and his retinues of sharks devise a plan to make rid of Pehu?

Well you’ll find out when you hear… “A Shark Punished at Waikiki”.
