1. During the block schedule on 4/27 and 4/28, conduct research on the topic you selected at random. In addition to information acquired on the internet, you are required to use the wealth of print resources your teachers have obtained. These print resources will be available in rooms 72, 88, and the Learning Center. Be sure to use a variety of resources. That is, DO NOT use only internet sources. Take notes on the sheets included in your American Civil War Project book. Don't forget to cite your sources using the guidelines provided in your packet.

2. After you and your partner(s) complete the research phase, you will need to create two products: a historical fiction (fictional account of a historical event that's based on research) storybook and a Civil War song that summarizes your research and set to the tune of a patriotic American song.

Civil War Storybook:

•Use your research notes to write an original historical fiction story. Your paper should be at least 2-3 pages in length and written for a fifth grade audience. Drafts and the final storybook should have 1-inch margins, be typed using Times or Helvetica 12-point font, be single-spaced, and have a double-space between each paragraph. Refer to the rubrics in your booklet for details on grading. Your first draft with original sketches are due in English on Thursday, May 5.

•After peer editing your book in English and Social Studies, you and your partner(s) will reformat the text to create a 4-6 page storybook. Your storybook should include illustrations that enhance the text. Your 2nd draft with original illustrations in color are due on Wednesday, May 11 in English.

•Your final draft is due in English on Friday, May 13.

•On Wednesday, May 18, you will have one final opportunity to finish your final product. Final versions of your text, illustrations, and bibiliography are due on Wednesday, May 18 by the end of 8th period to Mrs. Teraoka. Last day to submit late projects for a 40% grade penalty is Friday, May 20.

Civil War Song:

•Each set of partners will compose words to an original song that summarizes their topic to the tune of a patriotic American song.

•You and your partner(s) will perform the song for a Kauila team teacher, who will then tape performances for the team. Taped performances will be shared at a later date. Be ready to present on Wednesday, May 18.
